PSPO I Certification: Exam, Product Owner Topics and How to Prepare

What is PSPO I?

PSPO I validates a fundamental understanding of Professional Scrum Product Ownership.

It is not simply a test of Product Backlog vocabulary. Scrum.org emphasizes the Product Owner's responsibility for enabling value creation and connecting product strategy, stakeholders and the Scrum Team.

A candidate should understand both the Scrum framework and the product-management concepts that support effective Product Ownership.

Who should consider PSPO I?

PSPO I can be useful for:

What does PSPO I test?

Scrum.org identifies several focus areas.

This makes PSPO I distinctly product-oriented. A candidate should understand how Scrum supports value delivery, how the Product Owner works with stakeholders and the Scrum Team, and how product decisions connect to goals and strategy.

What does a Product Owner do in Scrum?

The Product Owner is accountable for maximizing the value of the product resulting from the work of the Scrum Team and for effective Product Backlog management.

That does not mean the Product Owner is simply a backlog administrator or someone who writes requirements.

Effective Product Ownership involves clear direction, transparent ordering of work, stakeholder engagement, Product Goals, value decisions and collaboration with the rest of the Scrum Team.

Candidates should study the Product Owner accountability as defined in the Scrum Guide rather than relying only on how a particular organization happens to use the job title.

Do you need Product Owner experience?

Scrum.org does not require formal Product Owner work experience as an eligibility prerequisite for buying the PSPO I assessment.

Practical product experience can still make scenario questions easier to interpret. Candidates without that experience should spend additional time understanding Product Value, Product Goals, backlog decisions, stakeholders and evidence-based product thinking.

Do you need a Scrum.org course?

No.

Scrum.org states that course attendance is not a prerequisite for PSPO I.

Training can still be useful, and Scrum.org recommends instructor-led and self-paced options, but the certification assessment is available independently.

What should you study for PSPO I?

Begin with the current Scrum Guide and understand Scrum as a complete framework.

Then deepen the product-management areas emphasized by Scrum.org:

2. Scrum Team accountabilities.
3. Product Owner accountability.
4. Product Goals and Product Vision.
5. Product Value.
6. Product Backlog management.
7. Stakeholders and customers.
8. Forecasting and release planning.

12. Definition of Done.
13. Scrum.org Scrum Open and Product Owner Open assessments.
14. Scenario-based questions that require prioritization and value-oriented judgment.

Avoid reducing preparation to memorizing backlog terms. The assessment is designed to validate an understanding of how Professional Scrum Product Ownership works.

Product Vision, Product Value and Product Backlog

Three areas deserve particular attention.

PSPO I versus PSM I

Both certifications require strong understanding of Scrum, but their emphasis differs.

PSM I focuses more strongly on Scrum Master accountabilities, Scrum effectiveness, facilitation, coaching and helping people and organizations understand and apply Scrum.

PSPO I focuses more strongly on Product Owner accountability, Product Value, Product Vision, Product Backlog management, business strategy and stakeholder/customer outcomes.

Professionals working across both delivery and product leadership may eventually find value in studying both perspectives.

How difficult is PSPO I?

The 85% passing score means mistakes are costly, and the 60-minute time limit creates pressure.

The difficulty is not only remembering Scrum terms. Candidates need to make value-oriented decisions while staying consistent with the Scrum framework.

Questions can test whether a candidate understands the difference between stakeholder requests and Product Owner accountability, the relationship between Product Goals and backlog decisions, the importance of self-management, and how value should influence product choices.

PSPO I languages and French preparation

Scrum.org currently lists the native PSPO I assessment languages as:

• •Simplified Chinese through the referenced Scrum.org China option

Scrum.org also provides guidance on browser translation while noting that it cannot guarantee translation quality.

The official Scrum Guide is available in French.

CertOnyx plans to provide English and French PSPO I preparation, but the CertOnyx preparation language does not change the official languages offered by Scrum.org.

Does PSPO I expire?

No.

Scrum.org currently describes PSPO I as a lifetime certification with no annual renewal fee.

PSPO I vs PSPO II and PSPO III

PSPO I validates fundamental Product Owner mastery and knowledge of Professional Scrum.

PSPO II focuses on a more advanced ability to apply Professional Scrum Product Ownership in complex situations.

PSPO III represents a deeper level of mastery and requires candidates to demonstrate sophisticated understanding and reasoning.

For most candidates entering the Scrum.org Product Owner certification path, PSPO I is the appropriate first step.
