PMP Certification 2026: Exam, Eligibility, Cost and How to Prepare

Available on CertOnyx

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is designed for experienced professionals who lead projects and want to demonstrate that they can manage people, processes and business priorities across predictive, agile and hybrid environments.

The current PMP exam contains 180 questions and provides 240 minutes of exam time. The exam is distributed across three domains: People (33%), Process (41%) and Business Environment (26%). PMI states that approximately 40% of exam items represent predictive project-management approaches, while the remaining 60% is divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches.

CertOnyx helps PMP candidates prepare through bilingual practice, a dedicated diagnostic assessment, focused question sessions and exam-style practice. CertOnyx is an independent exam-preparation platform and does not administer the official PMP examination.

What is the PMP certification?

PMP is a professional certification for people who lead and manage projects. It is not tied to one industry or one delivery method. The current exam tests the candidate's ability to apply project leadership across predictive, adaptive/agile and hybrid situations.

The PMP is not an entry-level certification. PMI requires qualifying education, professional project leadership experience and project-management training before a candidate can sit the exam.

Who is PMP for?

PMP may be relevant for project managers, delivery leads, implementation managers, PMO professionals, transformation leads, consultants and other professionals who take responsibility for project decisions, delivery and outcomes.

A job title of “Project Manager” is not the only relevant factor. What matters for eligibility is whether the candidate can document the education and project-leadership experience required by PMI.

Professionals who do not yet meet PMP experience requirements may want to explore PMI's CAPM® certification first.

PMP eligibility requirements in 2026

PMI currently provides four education-and-experience routes. Project leadership experience must be non-overlapping and must have been gained within the past 10 years.

Route 1 — Secondary school

A high-school diploma or equivalent plus at least 60 months / 5 years of experience leading projects.

Route 2 — Post-secondary short-cycle education

A recognized associate-level, higher-certificate, advanced technical or vocational qualification at the relevant framework level plus at least 48 months / 4 years of experience leading projects.

Route 3 — Bachelor's degree or equivalent

A bachelor's degree or higher, or an officially bachelor-equivalent professional or vocational qualification, plus at least 36 months / 3 years of experience leading projects.

Route 4 — PMI GAC-accredited degree

A bachelor's or postgraduate degree awarded by a program accredited by PMI's Global Accreditation Center (GAC) plus at least 24 months / 2 years of experience leading projects.

Candidates should verify their own education level and evidence requirements directly with PMI.

The 35 hours of project-management training

PMP applicants also need 35 hours of qualifying project-management training. PMI currently recognizes several routes, including qualifying project-management courses and an active CAPM certification.

A key rule changes on 1 December 2026. From that date, live instructor-led PMP training will be eligible only when delivered by specified provider types, including PMI Authorized Training Partners, China Registered Education Providers and eligible accredited higher-education programs.

PMI separately states that self-paced PMP education can still come from any organization, subject to its eligibility and audit rules.

Practice questions and practice exams alone should not be presented as satisfying the 35-hour training requirement. CertOnyx's current question-practice product is an exam-preparation resource, not a claim that practice alone constitutes the required training.

PMP exam format

The current PMP exam includes:

  • 180 total questions
  • 170 scored questions
  • 10 unscored pretest questions
  • 240 minutes
  • two 10-minute breaks
  • delivery through an eligible Pearson VUE test center or secure online option

Question formats may include single-response questions, multiple-response questions, drag-and-drop or enhanced matching, and scenario/case-based formats.

The 10 pretest questions do not affect the score and are mixed into the exam.

PMP exam domains

People — 33%

This domain focuses on leading and working with people. It covers areas such as team leadership, conflict, stakeholder engagement, communication, knowledge transfer and expectations.

Process — 41%

This is the largest domain. It covers planning and delivery, scope, value, resources, procurement, finance, schedule, quality, risk, change, governance, closure and other delivery processes.

Business Environment — 26%

This domain connects projects to the wider organization and environment. It includes compliance, governance, organizational change, external changes and business value.

Predictive, agile and hybrid thinking is distributed across all three domains rather than isolated into separate sections.

Predictive, agile and hybrid coverage

PMI states that approximately 40% of exam items represent predictive project-management approaches. The remaining 60% is divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches.

This means PMP preparation should not be based only on traditional predictive planning. Candidates need to be comfortable identifying the right response for different project environments and understanding when predictive, adaptive or hybrid practices are appropriate.

How much does the PMP exam cost?

PMI currently lists:

  • US$405 for PMI members
  • US$655 at the full/non-member price

These are PMI examination fees, not CertOnyx prices. Candidates should confirm current pricing with PMI before paying because fees can change.

Is the PMP exam available in French?

Yes. PMI currently lists French among the official PMP exam languages.

CertOnyx also supports English and French question preparation. Learners can choose their default exam-practice language in their CertOnyx profile.

How difficult is the PMP exam?

PMI does not publish a simple fixed public percentage that candidates can use as a guaranteed PMP passing score.

The exam is demanding because many questions require judgment in a realistic project situation. Several answer choices may appear plausible, but the candidate must identify the best next action or the most appropriate project-management response.

Good preparation therefore requires more than memorizing terms. Candidates should understand why one response is stronger than another and practice making decisions under time pressure.

How should you prepare for PMP?

A practical preparation plan can include:

  1. Read the current PMP Examination Content Outline.
  2. Understand what PMI tests in People, Process and Business Environment.
  3. Study predictive, adaptive/agile and hybrid delivery approaches.
  4. Practice scenario-based questions frequently.
  5. Review incorrect answers and identify recurring weak areas.
  6. Recalculate formula questions yourself.
  7. Use focused practice on weaker topics.
  8. Add timed sessions as the exam approaches.
  9. Complete realistic mock exams to practice pacing and endurance.
  10. Return to official PMI sources when you are uncertain about eligibility, exam structure or current policy.

The PMBOK® Guide is an important PMI standard, but PMP preparation should not assume that one publication alone contains everything a candidate needs for the exam.

CertOnyx does not administer the PMP exam and should not be presented as PMI or as a PMI Authorized Training Partner unless that status changes in the future.

PMP renewal and PDUs

PMP certification is maintained through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements program.

PMP holders currently need 60 PDUs in each three-year certification cycle. PMI requires at least 35 Education PDUs and allows up to 25 Giving Back PDUs. PMI also sets minimum learning requirements across the Talent Triangle.

PDUs are different from the 35 training hours required to apply for the PMP exam.

CertOnyx is exploring a future certification-maintenance experience based on structured professional-development activities, qualifying learning-time tracking and completion evidence. PMP holders would self-report qualifying PDUs to PMI, and PMI would retain final audit and acceptance authority.
